Black spots on the bathroom ceiling and in the grout

A bathroom makes steam every day. We clean out the growth and fix the ventilation so the room can dry between showers.

Call (518) 767-7994
A white bathtub against teal glass tile with a small window and a curved tap.
Grout lines and corners are where bathroom growth starts.

Steam has to go somewhere

In a bathroom the moisture comes from the shower, and the ceiling and the corners are where it settles. A fan that is weak, too small or ducted into the attic instead of outside lets that steam hang around.

We remove the growth from ceilings, grout and caulk, replace what cannot be cleaned and check that the fan actually moves air out of the house. A clean ceiling with the same weak fan will be dark again within a year.

Look for

  • Dark spots on the ceiling above the shower
  • Black or pink growth in grout and caulk lines
  • Peeling paint on the walls near the tub
  • A fan that barely moves a sheet of paper

How the job goes

  1. 01Check the roomWe look at the ceiling, the walls, the tub surround and the fan and duct.
  2. 02Clean and removeGrowth is cleaned from hard surfaces, and soft or damaged material is taken out.
  3. 03Fix the airflowThe fan, the duct and the vent are checked, and we tell you if they need replacing.
  4. 04Seal and finishFresh caulk and a stain-blocking primer go on once everything is dry.

Questions about this job

01
Will the mold come back?
Not if the steam is handled. A fan that vents outside and runs for 20 minutes after a shower does most of the work.
02
Is the pink film in my shower mold?
Usually it is a bacteria that likes damp, soapy surfaces. It wipes off, but it is a sign the area stays wet.
03
Can you replace the fan?
We tell you what size and type fits the room. An electrician or the remodeler you use can install it, or we can arrange it.
